Because golf is in many ways a man’s sport, there is a certain macho aspect to it. Men appreciate other men who hit the ball long and hard and straight and don’t really pay much attention to the players who use finesse and guile to get the ball in the hole. They think better of a player who drives 300 yards than they do someone who shoots 70. That’s just the way it is.
If you want to be one of the guys who drives it 300 yards, then you have to increase your golf swing speed – there is just no way about it. But, that doesn’t mean that you have to go in hyper-mode throughout your entire swing. If you watch any of the pro golfers, their backswing is not fast, it is slow and deliberate, but they accelerate through the swing at such a speed that you can hear the club whip through the air. When you watch their swing in slow motion, you can actually see their club arcing, as the force bends the shaft.
Your golf swing speed in part determines the flight of your ball. However, that doesn’t mean that the guy with the fastest swing will hit it the furthest! There is much more to it than that. You have to be able to make perfect contact with the ball, hitting it on the sweet spot and making contact with just the right part of the club. Any variation and you will not be successful.
Golf swing speed can be measured in most of the larger sporting goods stores. They will be able to measure your swing speed at the fastest point, which should be just when you make contact. From that information, you should be able to determine the type of shafts and balls you should play.
