Improve Putting in Golf

Posted by Rob Jeffries

Most golfers spend the vast majority of their practice time on the driving range. They spend hours, trying to improve their drive, their distance, and refine their iron play. One thing that few golfers ever practice is putting, but good putting in golf is essential if you are ever going to score lower.

Of course it is a lot more fun to stand on the driving range with your big, long driver, hitting 200 or 250 yard drives, admiring them as they fly, but remember that in a real round, you will only be using that driver perhaps twelve times altogether. Every other shot will be something that requires finesse, strength, discipline, knowledge, and a great deal of luck, including putting in golf.

Putting is more than a learned skill, it requires feel for the ball, for the speed of the green, and even knowing what type of grass is growing. You need to be able to read the grain, the slope, the speed, and convert that into hand-eye coordination. You can’t be a good putter based on luck and natural athletic ability alone. You need to practice it and practice it often. Remember that you will putt at least 18 times in every round, and some players will putt almost 50 times, so you are actually better off spending your spare time working on your putts than you are on your drive!
