Golf & Training Go Together

Posted by Rob Jeffries

Take a look at the arms on Camilo Villegas. Those are not the forearms and biceps of a golfer. Those are the guns of a superbly fit athlete. Golf was once a game played by overweight, unfit, cigar-smoking, drinking older men. It is now the younger, fitter, and stronger golfers who are taking the lead. Tiger Woods lifts weights on a regular basis and is believed to be perhaps the fittest athlete on the tour. This, in part, explains why he dominates.

Golf & training do go together, now more than ever. Whether you are at the top of the professional tour, or just a guy or gal playing on a monthly basis, there is no doubt that fitness will help your game.

There are several aspects to fitness – strength, flexibility, stamina or aerobic capacity, and of course general athleticism. Most golfers ignore the effect that increasing strength can have on both the length and accuracy of a swing. It isn’t just the drive that is affected – all swings can be made better by simply being in better shape.

Stamina is perhaps the most important aspect of a golfer’s fitness. Everyone gets tired out on the course, even when driving in a cart. It takes a lot of stamina to swing the club 80 or 90 times per round, and if you are doing a practice swing each time, double that amount. Add to that the number of times you bend down to pick up a ball, place a tee, or walk through the woods to find a mishit ball, and you will recognize how important it is to be fit.

Golf & training do go hand in hand and by working hard to increase your overall fitness level, you will see your golf game reach new heights.
