If you are a swimmer, you will swim thousands of laps before racing another swimmer. However, for most golfers, practice is usually not part of their life. However, the best golf training may well take place in the gym. Golf may seem like a leisurely sport, but it involves many aspects of overall fitness. Aerobic capacity is important because of the amount of walking that can take place over a long period of time. With the average golf course being over four miles long, a round of golf means a lot of mileage on the feet. Strength is also important because of the many, many times you will swing the club during one round. Even if you are scoring 80 or below, you are still swinging that club several hundred times in a day. You need a lot of strength to do that without pain or deterioration of swing.
The best golf training really can begin in the gym. Improve your aerobic capacity and overall strength and you will see an almost immediate improvement in your game.
