Golf Swing Lessons, Tips & Instruction – Extending Your Arms In Follow Through

The other day I was walking down the range towards the first tee to go play nine holes and there was a guy with a goofy looking swing that caught my attention.
I didn’t watch long enough or ask him to make sure of what he was doing, but it looked to me like he was trying to create extension in his through swing after he hit the ball. It gave me the idea for today’s email.
Extension…a lot of people talk about creating extension after you’ve hit the ball. This is good and it is indeed a characteristic of many long hitters, but it doesn’t come from where you might think it does. Sometimes I see people, like my inspirational little buddy mentioned above, forcibly trying to straighten their arms after impact. The intent might be good, but it only makes their swing look awkward and it actually slows their speed down.
Rather, the extended arm look that you see lots of power hitters have is a product of having little to no tension in their arms. They are so tension free in their hands and arms that the weight of the club has naturally pulled their arms straight. THAT is what creates extension, being tension free…not from intentionally trying to straighten your arms.
With that in mind, give that a try on the range. Free up the tension in your swing, and simply swing relaxed. Let the club naturally and fluidly pull your arms straight. You can still swing fast, just don’t swing hard.
