Whenever golfers seek out written instruction, they usually read what the biggest names in the business have to say. They are advertised as the best instructors because they are retained by the top players.
But really, who couldn’t teach Tiger Woods? The guy can hit the ball 300 yards and win the U.S. Open with a broken leg and severely damaged knee. He would still be unbeatable whether his instructor is Hank Haney or Hank Hill of propane fame.
The so-called instructors on the tour don’t have to teach the players how to play. They already know how to play far better than their teacher. The teachers are, in reality, just coaches and advisers for the players.
But the average player is far different in their needs. It requires a different kind of communication skill to be able to help someone learn the game when they do not already excel at it.
While it may be somewhat helpful to have a professional guide you when you are working on your swing, professional putting instruction is another story. There is no right stance or grip for them to teach. There is no right putting stroke.
Nothing is more important to your score than putting, but professional putting instruction is not necessary. Other than perhaps a temporary boost in confidence from having taken a putting lesson, there is no correct stroke or grip for you to be taught.
Putting is a target game that is not taught by a professional golf instructor. It has a special set of fundamentals totally different from golf and unknown to them.
